Can I see a physical therapist without a prescription or referral from my doctor?

Yes, you can see a physical therapist without having a referral or prescription from a doctor, however, some insurances do require one. Blue Cross Blue Shield, Sanford, as well as a few others do not require a referral for physical therapy. You can always double-check with your insurer to see if you would need prior authorization before receiving treatment. Please feel free to contact Relieve Physical Therapy for more information.

Do you have to be an athlete to receive your services?

No, you do not need to be an athlete to receive physical therapy. At Relieve Physical Therapy, we treat a variety of injuries. In fact, the majority of injuries are non-sports related; they may be post-surgical, work-related, or the result of an accident.

Do health insurance programs cover physical therapy?

Most therapy treatments are covered by health insurance. We will assist you in determining the amount of your insurance coverage as well as the frequency of treatments.

Are you in-network with my health insurance?

Relieve Physical Therapy takes most major insurance providers. If you have specific questions, please contact us and we will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Is a physical therapist a doctor?

Not in the traditional sense. A physical therapist is not a medical doctor and cannot prescribe medication. However, you must first earn a doctorate in physical therapy (DPT) to become a physical therapist. Anyone who earns a doctorate may use the honorific Dr. before their name.

How long will my appointment last?

Your first appointment will last approximately one hour. Dr. Natalie Purcell will complete a comprehensive evaluation, which includes medical history review, thorough evaluation of your flexibility, diagnostic testing, strength and endurance, your current functional deficiencies, and your goals with therapy. At the conclusion of your appointment, Dr. Purcell will explain your personalized treatment plan and answer any questions you may have. Following appointments may last anywhere from 30-60 minutes depending on your individualized treatment.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

To bring on your first visit:

  • A prescription/referral (if needed) for physical therapy from your referring physician, PA, or ARNP.

  • Health insurance card and a valid photo I.D. (we will make a copy of your cards)

  • After you contact us to set up your first appointment, we will send you electronic intake paperwork through email that you can fill out ahead of time prior to your first appointment. If you prefer to fill them out in person, please let us know in advance and we can have printed forms ready for you when you arrive. We ask that you arrive 15 min early for your first appointment if choosing the paper forms.

  • In case of an automobile accident or worker’s compensation claim, also bring any case manager or insurance adjuster contact names, phone numbers, and claim number.

  • Please wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your problem areas.

What will happen once therapy is completed?

Upon discharge, you receive a home exercise program to further enhance your rehabilitation outcome and prevent the possibility of future re-injury.
